Is This The Worst Press Release Ever?
Yes. Via our good friends as the Taxpayers’ Alliance, their latest bit of in depth research; that is to say that they sent out a questionnaire and publish the results with a bit of commentary. That’s enough, it seems, to be quoted extensively and approvingly in the national press.
Honestly, what a joke. Simply a bald statement of fact, no attempt at analysis, and the annoying statistic that the money raised in parking fines has actually FALLEN by 16% this year explained away with some speculative guff about “the recession may have made drivers more cautious”. Quite laughable.
But this is only the press release; you’d expect the full report and attached pdf to go into more detail, wouldn’t you? Well, if so, then you’d be sadly mistaken.
Town halls have been accused by campaigners of using motorists as “cash cows” despite research showing that the money raised in parking fines dropped 16% last year.
Figures obtained by the Taxpayers’ Alliance (TPA), which campaigns for lower taxes, showed the total for 2008/9 was £328 million - down from £379 million the previous year.
The recession may have made drivers more cautious about not breaking rules, the TPA suggested.
